Running Stitch

The length of the stitch on the front side can vary than that on the underside. Usually, there is more thread shown on the front than the underside in a running stitch. Used for outlines and borders.

Back Stitch

Back Stitch is made by taking the thread backward than the conventional forward motion, and thus the name. It follows curves and bends well in a design. There are no spaces between each stitch and so gives a continuous appearance. Cross stitch patterns use them too. Like the running stitch, back stitch also lays a foundation for many variations over it. Used for outlines.
